Why are shotguns always sawed off?

In addition to changing the shot pattern, shortening the barrel makes the weapon easier to conceal. It has the disadvantage that with the reduced mass, the recoil will be much more annoying.
 
When you shorten the barrel of the shotgun it not only makes it easier to conceal but also makes the shot spread out further quicker.
