Why are restaurants in London generally not very good?

I stayed two months in London this past summer. I absolutely loved the city, but I was surprised and really disappointed at how the food is generally not very good. The food was not completely terrible, mind you I ate at two or three amazing restaurants, but most places were just simply average. I am not talking about traditional english food, but all types of different cultural food in London. This surprises me because for such a gigantic, multicultural city, one would think the food would be amazing. Also, the portions are ridiculously small for such expensive prices. I am from San Francisco and there are tons of amazing restaurants here, and I know other American cities have that too. Is there any possible reason for this disappointment in London's food?

There are some terrific restaurants but in the touristy areas most are poor- poor food, poor service and high cost.

Just take your pick about the type of food you want.

Many pubs offer the best vale.

As to quantity, most British tourists to USA complain about being given too much on their plates! Just what you are used to. Wonder why there are so many obese Americans.

Remember food costs in USA are artificially low due to US subsidies to farmers. These affect the rest of the world's ability to export food there and are a major contributory factor to world poverty. Farmers have votes so the government is unwilling to reduce these subsidies.

I've found some of the restaurants you go to here, are aimed at people willing to spend a ridiculous sum on something that tastes not all that great and ridiculously small (wag's, hedge fund manager's yummy mummy wives and daughters)

But...having said that, you can find some real gems in central as well...and of course the dessert places are amazing
