Why are Republicans so against universal health care?

I've never really understood it. I'm listening to Fox News to try to get an idea on an opinion, but I just keep noticing how "The government is trying to kill the elderly! Fight for your rights! Fight for your rights!" keeps showing up. I mean, no where in the bill does it deny the elderly medicaid. And it' not like the plan calls for an extermination of anyone over 65.

I don't really understand. Is it because the government would be more involved in the people's lives? I'm just looking to understand Republican opinions. I'm 15 years old, so take it easy on me and try to remain respectful.

Thank you very much, in advance, for your answers?

Conservatives want to keep the public option off the table, because, as they would argue, it would "destroy the free markets" and give the government an unending source that would eliminate the competition. This argument fails to address why in a free market the insurers would opt to levy higher preniums instead of faithfully keeping costs down so that middle-class can afford coverage.They have also said that letting the government to offer public option would end the right for a patient to choose their doctor. This lie has been said over and over again, despite the White House battling these rumors with facts for some time. All of these tactics show that the conservatives are desperate to have their way in politics, and if they don't have power, its better to destroy the winning party's platform by playing it dirty.

They are only against it for Americans. They had no problem funneling billions of dollars to provide universal health care for Iraqis.

Ha ha..we believe in personal responsibility....until you need help from the government. The republicans believe in healthcare but they also believe in elections. The reason for their resistance is to regain power. If the Democrats fail it will cause some losses in 2010. They believe in getting everyone healthcare, they just believe in doing it differently...mostly through tax cuts!

Why should everybody pay for everybody elses health care? When you buy a car don't you get a loan and pay for it? Isn't your life at least as important as a car? Get a fucking loan and the surgery you need to save your own fucking life.

Well we already have a 1.8 trillion dollar deficit so far this year.

The Congressional budget office says we will have 8 trillion dollars of deficit spending over the next 10 years.

So do you really think this is the right time, to add another government program that will cost several trillion dollars ?

Where is all this money gonna come from ?

40% of all working people in the US , pay no Federal income tax's already. Because all the deductions in the tax code.

That leaves 60% to pay all the income tax's.

We cannot take all thier money, now can we ?

My opposition to universal health care is that it is not the government's responsibility to give care to those who, for whatever reason, can not afford insurance for themselves. To grant government this power, as has actually already happened in a small way, is to replace both family and community with government control.
I have a preexisting condition that has, in the past, required hospitalization. When I went to the government for help, I had to fill out dozens of forms, answer thousands of questions that had nothing to do with my health, and then was told what the government will and will not do. When I went to my church for the same help, their only question was "How may we help you?".
My hospitalization was then covered in part through the church's charity outreach, and the person who is now my doctor is a parishioner at my church. Yes, I have to give back to my church, what I can, when I can, but no care was denied.
The way HR 3200 was written, what you do not see as the "extermination of those over 65" may very well be seen as such by future generations.

We believe in Personal Responsibility.

Unless you are disabled then there's no reason why a perfectly able bodied person to not have a job and not paying for their own health insurance.

I've worked in Health care for 28 years, about half of that in some aspects of Government HC, which is a train wreck full of waste, mismanagement, red tape etc.

To have Government Health care for the nation would decrease the quality and scope (things we can do for people)....It would increase taxes also to the point that yes, everyone would get health care, but far far poorer in Quality than what we can get now.

Because "everyone" is paying for HC, then critical cases that would be treated aggressively would be triaged down to "Is the outcome (this human's life) worth the cost."

So yes, the elderly would be not considered worth cancer treatments, surgeries, rehab (as the case with good friends in Montreal).

We have the best system on the planet...rehab, surgical procedures, cancer treatments etc..... the cost is out of control. THAT's what needs to be fixed. I'd like to see us keep the quality and simply find ways to reign in the costs.

They are brainwashed into thinking that Government can't run it successfully, yet somehow ignore the fact that hundreds of other countries do it very successfully already.

If we're so great a country I don't know why they think we can't do it either.

1. They think it will damage the private healthcare industry;
2. They don't want their taxes to go to pay for healthcare for people who can't afford health insurance;
3. They see comprehensive healthcare as some kind of irreversible step on the road to socialism.

LOL, Britain has comprehensive healthcare and so do other countries like France, Germany etc. Unfortunately, some people have issues with Europe. You know, that continent the other side of the pond which supplied America's immigrants in the past and is supplying much of her military back-up today.
