While Ford may be generating a profit now (mostly due to the temporary cash for clunkers ordeal), the whole caveat is Ford still has to cut all of their debt (they're mortgaged right down to the blue oval) while Chrysler & GM have clean slates.
BTW, Ford did eventually get a federal loan , or as the conservative media brainwashed the mass to think, a "bailout", after all the BS settled down. They didn't accepot it upfront for PR reasons. The government virtually gave them 5 billion dollars under the table.
