Why are people fighting the development of renewable energy sources?

I don't understand why people seem to hate the idea of renewable energy sources. What's wrong with it? How is it hurting the economy? It'll lower the cost of production of electricity and satisfy the ever growing demand for power. Not to mention even if you don't believe in global warming what about the smog that's covering the entire LA sky. Smog is proven to cause respiratory problems like asthma. You can actually SEE it, do you think that's good for you? Even if global warming isn't real, Even if there's enough oil to last us forever what's wrong with finding a cleaner way to produce energy, I mean you can tell how dirty gas burns by looking inside the hood of your car or your tail pipe. There's no sacrifice, electric cars can move quicker than the majority of super cars for a fraction of the price including Ferraris and Lamborghinis e.g. Ariel Atom, Tesla roadster, T-Rex. I really don't see any downside.

Big oil rules our planet. Anything that threatens their profits will be eliminated or debunked. There is a guy who invented a car that ran on water. It had 13 times the power of gasoline and zero emissions. He turned up dead under questionable circumstances like so many others. Google this: - water powered car- and watch the video, or - alternative energy - and prepare to be outraged

The same reason why one of my ancestors opposed tractors and wanted horses instead.

It is called CONSERVATISM and in our fast changing world, especially in the field of technology it is simply the wrong attitude to have.

Almost all major developments are the result of a very limited number of people which were much more creative and forward looking than their peers.

If you want an exemple of conservatism, go to the website of the "Heritage Foundation" which even opposes energy efficiency. Yes they oppose the maximization of economic benefits per unit of resources consummed.

AI strongly agree with your viewpoint. Why do people oppose? Let me share with you one thing - do we remember when Galileo (following Copernicus) first said that the earth moves around the sun?
And another story. There was a young fine couple in a country. The wife, whenever baked a hen, used to cut the corners. One day, her husband asked, why do you cut this? She said, well, I saw my mom doing this...I think it makes it tastier. They went out and asked mom. She replied, she saw her mom doing this. When the young lady went to her grand ma and asked her why - the grandma's response was – “I has a small baking tray. I used to cut the corners of the chicken so that I could fit the whole chicken in the tray.”
People, are generally scared of changes. They are so scared that they close their mind in accepting the new idea and even look at its benefits. To make people accept it, we need more marketing people and motivational analysts rather than scientific analysis. The problem lies in the consumers minds, not in the product itself.

Renewable Energy – A Legacy Worth Fighting For?
- by Ishak Zakaria
The Global Turmoil
Much has been talked, debated and researched on the effect of global warming leading to
climate change phenomenon causing untold havoc of biblical proportion. The terror with
which the turmoil was unleashed has left a trail of devastation, costing thousand of death
to human lives and damages to properties. In a recent report produced by the World Health
Organisation (WHO), the UN Environment Program and the World Meteorological Program,
found that at least 150,000 people die needlessly each year as a direct result of global
warming. The report was published at the climate talks in Milan, where ministers were
trying to put the finishing touches to the Kyoto protocol, designed to put legal limits on
developed countries' greenhouse gas emissions. Increased warmth has intensified the spread
of diseases, such as diarrhoeal diseases spread by bacteria, mostly via unclean water and
food, spread and develop more quickly in warmer temperatures and humidity.
Yet, there are still present amongst us those who chose to disbelief the signs that are so
glaringly evident. We continue to pursue the path of affluence that ignores the damage to
our environment. In our pursuit for development and modernisation, we squander away our
resources with impunity, not caring enough to consider leaving behind our children to
inherit for their survival. Still there are others who will dispassionately declare that the
depletion of energy resources will come long after they are gone. As a father of three
children whose future still lies ahead of them, it saddens me to think that when I am gone, they will suffer due to the greed of my doing.

Thanks!
