well ive got some feeder fish in a fish bowl, and they are all at the top. It looks like they are breathing air.there are bubbles coming out of their mouths. never seen a fish do this. The water quality is pretty bad so im guessing its that.
ouch you guys are harsh they are just feeder fish. I changed the water and they are good now. My needlefish needs food.

fish take in water through their gills. In the water is disolved oxygen and other minerals. They use the oxygen and what is left is exhaled

There is oxygen in the water.
There gills separate the water from the oxygen.
The bubbles are the carbon dioxide and left over water.
All fish breath through their gills like we use are lungs.
So if we swallowed too much water our body would send it back up as puke to get it out. Similar to the bubbles.

Hope I helped.

Yes they are breathing air.... if you don't provide an aerator ( the bubble blowing tube in a bigger fish tank) then fish need to get their air from the top of their environment. They need air to survive.
