Why are images/videos from space probes and satellites bad quality?

When I say 'bad' I don't mean like terrible... but they aren't as crystal clear as some of the images we have of Earth?

Probes such as New Horizons have been passed Saturn so why can't they get some good quality snap shots of them on the way past.

I understand that these planets are alot further away from Earth, but I don't see why distance make any difference to the quality of picture?
