Why are hippies and environmentalists all about organic foods when really

its not better for the environment? like I would consider myself an environmentalist. I love animals and hate to see the rain forest getting cut down. But as I see the world population growing and growing and growing, I feel we need to be able to feed ourselves with out making more way for farming and livestock.

I wish we could eat less meat, and replace our protein with BUGs!

But whats more realistic is we could use GE foods that could potentially lower the amount of land needed to grow our crops.

Why do environmentalists and hippies hate GE foods so much, I mean sure it has its downsides and shortcomings but the more we learn the better we do. I mean its better then going 100% back to organic and have to cut down way more wilderness to make up for its lower yields.

So WHY!
 
Organic is good for the earth by not using so many chemicals. But we also need to monitor ourselves and limit the Earth's total population. Even with GE and things yet to be invented this planet can only support a limited number of people and the areas they need to grow their foods.
 
Why not just cut out the middleanimals in the mix and just eat what we grow instead of feeding that to livestock animals. That would make a bigger difference.
