Why are gay men camp?

Now I know this is a huge generalisation and a stereotype, but why do so many gay men conform to the stereotype of beign effete or camp? obviously in some cases its affected as a sign to show you are gay. But how does that explain effeminate 8 year old boys who don't have any strong sexualtiy formation yet?
 
ahhh i see.

personally, i don't think this to be true. my friends sirius and remus are gay, and i think of either them as 'camp'.
i mean, they're just as... manly(?) as my straight guy friends, so....

thats one side of the gay gender spectrum, masculine gay men are the other, in the middle you have both/and guys, and neither/nor guys like me

Its like asking why are rainbows red, the answer is they aren't but red is part of the spectrum
