Why Are Films Now Opening On Wednesdays instead of Fridays?

Why are films now opening on Wednesdays instead of the traditional Fridays. I know a lot of films do open on a Wednesday or Friday in recent years but they are usually described as preview or advanced screenings on a wednesday and/or thursday with the official opening date being the firday. But now more and more films are "At cinemas everywhere from Wednesday". Recent examples are Night At The Museum 2, this week's Drag Me To Hell and next weeks Terminator Salvation. Is it because perhaps Orange Wednesdays has got more popular and Wednesday is now as big a night as a Friday or Saturday for cinema going?

BanRAB have started doing something similar for the album charts and also many cinemas have the orange wednesday deals. So people who would normally go to the cinema on a wednesday will be tempted to see the new film.

Well at least for the BIG films it should make it easier to get a seat on a friday night;) To be honest though it doesnt make any difference does it. If you go to the cinema on Fridays, then go on Fridays. Simple:)
