Why are degrees in psychology "of arts" and not "of science"?

This really irritates me. I have heard that some schools actually have a B.S. of psychology but most still go with B.A.
I know the difference depends on the courses for track such as the BS requiring more stats classes possibly, but it still seems like even regular psychology classes should constitute the science requirement since much of research in psychology is empirically based as with other sciences.
I am wondering if more programs are trying to get the arts changed to science and why there is still a bar on that it seems
Also no haters on "psychology isn't a real science" because research in it works on the basis of the scientific method. There is still much research that needs to be done but that is the same for all sciences
