And another thing: what's up with the word "sergeant"? Why is it spelled that way? Should we start pronouncing the word "serpent" as, "sahr-pent"? I mean, come on!! And-don't get me started- the worst one has got to be: "colonel". Can anyone show me any other word in the English language where the letter L is pronounced as an R?? It's nuts! Isn't military life hard enough?Do we need to add these bizarre, non-sensical rank words into the mix?

The rest of you who do not have an appreciation of the English language, any sense of humor, any sense of wonder....who think that asking a question like this constitutes the promotion of a political position....you can ignore me and my question. It's meant for people who have above average IQs. And someone who just joined Yahoo Answers today who is half my age and who cannot think of a better name than "?" shouldn't be spouting and trying to lecture people" who have 3000 points. Why not just try doing some research--taking the question for what it is and answering it.
