You might be putting too much pressure on yourself. I have a Master's degree in English/Creative writing and a Master's of Fine Art degree in poetry, and I stumble over simple things like addressing a loved one on a holiday card. So you are normal, it's extremely hard to write a beautiful poem for a loved on in part because it means so much to us. Here's a couple of possible solutions. 1 just focus on a wonderful event that the two of you shared together and write a narrative (a poem telling a story) poem about the event. This will help you focus on the details of the event and on him, rather then letting your mind bounce all over the place. 2 try to lighten up on yourself, does it really have to be the best poem ever? taking some of the self pressure off might help you find clarity. 3 isolate and explore a feeling or feelings. What is it like when you are eating dinner, or how do you feel when he holds your hand... I would use simple language and focus on an event or something you shared. I would not use the word "love", rather I would try to show through action or an event that love is present. Maybe the main thing is just to know that a lot of poets struggle in the area because we put to Much pressure on ourselves. So relax and just go for writing a decent poem, it doesn't have to be great, for him to think your great. good luck
