The viper hasnt changed much in appearance since the 90s. The R8 is something fresh and new. Audi is always going for the futuristic car look. The R8 is partially luxury meaning comfort.
 
Audi R8 wins every time.
American or German? German obviously. You've only got to look at how many classic Audis there are around to see that they make brilliant cars. They are efficient and they also have corners in Germany. Americans don't understand bends.

and my verdict: They are both close, but I would say Audi R8 is the best

Performance=Dodge Viper. It does not even compete with the Audi R8.

Audi R8 competes with Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Maserati Gran Turismo S and regular Chevy Corvette.

Dodge Viper competes with faster cars like Porsche 911 Turbo, Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari F430, Chevy Corvette Z06, and Aston Martin DB9.
 
I'd get the Viper if it was just a weekend toy. If I could only have 1 car I'd get the Audi because its more livable for every day life.

performance - Viper. It holds the production car lap record at Nurburgring and its faster in a straight line.
looks - Thats all opinion. They both look great in different ways.
comfort - Audi. The Viper is all about being a street legal race car which is why it has so much higher performance.
Quality - Neither is known for high quality. Dodge is Dodge and Audi is known for electrical issues everywhere. That said both cars are halo vehicles and are the best their company builds and would be pretty good.
Practicality - Audi. See comfort.

BTW - For the average driver they would be faster in the A8 because its full of computer controlled driving aids which can make an average driver look like a skilled driver. The Viper doesn't even have traction control. Its old school and if you look like a skilled driver its because you are. If you are a skilled driver it has a much higher potential than the A8 and almost every other street car in the world.
 
Got to be the Audi on all counts.

ps, the Viper DOES NOT hold the lap record for production cars at the Nurburgring: The Viper was heavily modified & entered as a Chrysler factory car & produced a lap time of 7 minutes 22 seconds on the 18th August 2008.

The Radical SR8 (completely standard, running road legal tyres) completed a circuit, independently verified by German magazine 'Sport Auto' at 6 minutes 55 seconds back in 2005. That's with a 2.6 litre engine.

The Viper was also slower than a stock Mitsubishi Evo 082, which was 5 seconds quicker than the Viper.
