I am in a bible class right now and there is much debate in it about two things:
1. Was Matthew the disciple the author of the book of Matthew.
2. Was he an eyewitness?
That last one seems pretty dumb to me because he was after all a disciple of Jesus, of course he was. Still there seems to be much debate about that fact.
