Recently I've been thinking about seeing a doctor. Over the past year or so I feel my stress levels and tension have gotten to be a problem. I was a serious athlete through college which I think was a release, and now having graduated and started working I am constantly stressed, very anxious and aggitated, and have had a horrible temper. It's to the point that my muscles even ache from tension. I feel it getting progressively worse, and am worrying over the littlest things, even when I know they're beyond my control. I mentioned something to my dad about thinking I have anxiety and he laughed and said he's known that for years.

Anyways, I don't have a general physician, just a gynecologist... and I don't really know who to see about it. I dont know if I should mention it to my gyn as she cant really do anything about it... but I really don't know if I want to jump to a psychiatrist. Can a physician help? What should I do???????

You said college athletics helped you release stress and now that you're working you're not doing athletics and getting too stressed out and getting too much tension. I think the answer is pretty simple. Sure go see a doctor first, maybe a therapist or a friend to talk out your stresses then go take up excercise again. Millions of hard working people take the time and effort after work to hit the gym and work out their tensions and to strengthen mind and body. SounRAB like just what you need. Regular massage sessions probably wouldn't hurt either. Doesn't sound like you really have an serious anxiety disorder yet just really on edge. Good luck!

I actually work at a fitness center, and do exercise regularly, without too much relief. I'm not at the point of panic attacks or anything, just constant worry/stress and tension. I can be sitting there in a good mood, and its like I'll all of a sudden feel guilty (for lack of a better word) and instantly a switch is flipped and I become very aggitated and upset over nothing. And like I said before, my temper has gotten increasingly worse, with the littlest things setting me off. I dont know...

I agree with Franks advice. See if it could be hormonal and if it is not see a therapist. If you are self motivated, and based on your athleticism it sounRAB like you are, I would try and find a therapist that can teach you CBT where you will learn how how to give yourself relief through coping exercises like countering your thoughts in TEA forms and putting things back in to perspective when you are stressing. Good luck and take care!

If you think your level of physical fitness is pretty good already then it could be just a lot of internalized stress. Talk therapy may help you with various underlying issues you may be having in your life that you might not be dealing with effectively or want to face. If there are issues that need to be sorted out in the open a licensed therapist can certainly help with that.

Other things that can explain unexplained mood swings is hormonal irabalances. Speak to the doctor and tell them of your symptoms and maybe get bloodwork done. You said you don't think your gyno can help. On the contrary I think your gyno has dealt with many cases of mood swings due to hormonal issues. It might be worth it to bring it up to them and if she doesn't think it's hormonal she can refer you to someone else. Good luck.

Thanks.

Would they use blood work to check hormones, or is it based more on my symptoms/description of how I'm feeling?

They would ask about symptoms for sure but there would also be blood work performed. Good luck!

Thank you for responding. As simple as it seems, I hadn't really thought of the hormonal aspect. I see her this month, so we'll see. Thanks
