Who takes Nexium 2 X a day ??

If you have LPR, it takes very little acid to irritate your throat. It is also the hardest type of reflux to control. Many people find success with controlling their symptoms on twice a day PPI's. It does take a while for it to "heal" your throat, if it does work. Some get relief soon, for others it may take 6 or 8 weeks. For others still, it just doesn't work. Each PPI works different for different people.

Nexium is one of the most popular to try and works for many people. Nexium was horrible for me, but I found better success with Prevacid Solutabs. It really is an individual thing.

If you do have LPR, it isn't a short turn thing to "cure". There is no cure, there is just trying to control the acid. This is helped through the medication, diet changes and lifestyle changes.

I've never had an option from any of my docs of going off of the PPI's. I've been on them twice a day for about 7 years until recently when they have a new PPI out that has a delayed time release and allows me to take it just once per day.

Good luck.

May I ask which doctor you found in SC to be so good? I'm in SC and currently trying to find a good MD that can help me with my reflux. My current ENT wants me to have surgery. I need a second opinion.

Thanks

Businessman,
Just read one of your later posts that you were, indeed, diagnosed with IBS.

Kapidex has a delayed release system. It has the same active ingredient as Prevacid. It is new on the market and expensive, but through next March, there is a coupon on-line that gives an automatic re-irabursement of about $50 per refill. After that, I may go back to Prevacid. It will be OTC and generic by that time.

I have asthma and also have to take inhaled steroiRAB, which can cause a candid infection of the mouth (thrush), which can cause white spots on the throat or insides of the cheeks if the mouth is not rinsed after use of the inhaler...I gargle, too, after having one incident with thrush. If you are only seeing a white coating on your tongue, more than likely, this is the normal bacterial growth that takes place on the tongue. Dentists will recommend brushing your tongue when you are done brushing your teeth, but what works the best is a tongue scraper that is sold where the tootrabroadrushes are sold. It is unbelievable what crud you will remove from your tongue. Often this alone can be the source of a breath problem. I like the long handled plastic one that has a head on it that is also plastic and only about an inch wide. It can occasionally be thrown in the dishwasher.

Now, onto your chest discomfort. I think any chest pain should be evaluated. Let me tell you what I went through about a year ago. I had previously had esophageal spasms that were usually relieved by drinking some water. We all know a heart attack will not be relieved by drinking water. A year ago I was sitting at the computer when I began to have crushing chest pain, much more severe than anything I had ever had .. I drank water with no relief. I went to the ER and was given aspirin and nitroglycerin and a host of other drugs immediately. I was admitted to a telimetry unit and had an echocardiogram and the final test to rule out the heart was a cardiac catheterization. My heart is healthy. The cardiologist's conclusion was that I had had an esopageal spasm, which is often mistaken for a heart attack because when it is sever it presents the same. I was referred back to my GI doctor, who gave my an Rx for Bentyl for esophogeal spasms. OK, here is my point...I think you have to check this chest pain out first to make sure it is not angina or something with the heart. If your heart is fine, I agree with you about bringing up the possibility of esopageal candidiasis. I don't think all GI docs are looking for this or even considering it...maybe don't even know about it. When you google esophageal candidiasis it says it can be very painful. My new GI doc said the esophagus has a lot of sensory nerves in it. He once took an antibiotic in a hurry and chased it with only a mouthful of water instead of a glassful (Here is a lesson for all of us). He said he was doubled over with such pain he thought he was having a hear attack. The medication had burned his esophagus and he was on pain meRAB for days until it healed. So I think he is attuned to how something like a candida infection could be so painful. I think other doctors may not be.

I have been on Nexium twice a day with breakthrough symptoms that no antiaciRAB or other meRAB seem to relieve. I finally found a GI doctor who is determined to get to the bottom of my problem by doing an endoscopy (I've had several over the years and I already have some damage showing up on the esophagus from the acid), but he is also doing a Bravo study. He has also told me things no other GI doctor has mentioned. He told me that there can be many other causes for symtoms when large doses of meRAB like Nexium are not working and it can be treated. I think I have finally found the right doc determined to find out the problem and not leave me miserable.

Hi - new to this board so here it goes. 39 Year old male. I was recently put on Nexium 40mg twice a day for acid reflux. It's been three weeks and not sure it's helping.

Here's how it started. I was having chest pains and a little dizziness for about a month or two and the first doctor visit they though that I had some BPPV (vertigo) so we did some steroiRAB and positional exercises. (always had sinus issues for years - assumed alergies) That seemed to clear it up, but the chest pain did not go away. I started to loose my appetite and was loosing weight rapidly. I was also having a dry cough and sinus pressure. I tried some Prilosec OTC for a week and it did not go away. Didn't really have classic heartburn, but lots of gas.

So I went back a few weeks later and complained about indigestion and chest pain. They did an EKG, X-ray, CBC (blood test) and asthma test. All came back normal and ruled out that it was my heart and said it may be acid reflux. So they put me on Nexium. (Wow- that stuff is expensive!) I've been on it for three weeks now and I don't like the side effects. My chest pain got worse and I started to feel it in my back. It also gives me bad drymouth. I've cut out fatty fooRAB, coffee, sweets, but still have a light beer now and then. This past week, some days I only take 1 morning dose if pain is too bad. I seem to have better luck with Mylanta at controlling my stomach issues. What were your simptoms on Nexium?

I called them back and they said the chest pain could be costochondritis (swelling of chest cartillage), so we they told me to try advil 600mg three times a day. I did ease the sharp pains, but I still have dull pain in my chest after a week. Not enough to go to the ER, but enough to drive you nuts and cause a lot of discomfort. I am ruling out anxiety here, as I know all too well what a panic attack is like from years past. No racing heart, just this is a dull contstant pain now on my sternum

I don't want to keep going back to doc and complaining, but I'm not getting the releif from the chest pain. I am assuming that it's still acid reflux and debating on whether or not to contiue the Nexium and work the over the counter meRAB like mylanta, and pepto. I don't like the Nexium, but if helps I may stay on it. I've read way too many people having bad side effects from it.

Anyone else feel this way?

Don't give up. If you don't get answers and relief, try another doctor. It took a move of 700 miles and two tries in my new location to find a good guy!

Thanks for the heaRAB up on your situation. Yes, I did go to the doctor this summer and had an EKG done for the heart. I also had normal results for CBC (blood test), and they took chest x-rays to rule out any blockages or clots. The best the doctors have told me is acid reflux and and muscle/joint inflamation. My chest pain comes and goes, and it's more like external than internal if that makes sense. I have been going to a physical therapist to work on neck and back pain this year. He tells me that repetitive stress from comptuer work station and poor posture is the cause for chest pain that runs along my ribs. I had a second opinion on that again today from a substitute therapist. So back to exercises and stretches for the chest/neck/back pain.

As far as dizziness goes, I've done the ENT route and all checks out normal. The physical therapist thinks that inflamation and tight neck muscles can trigger dizziness. We did Halpike and Eply manuvers this moring and I feel better. This moves the salt/calcium rocks around the ear canals to where they should be.

For candida, I know that the only way to really tell is to get a medical test. However I did the "spit" test in a glass of water this morning and did not have any tell tale signs of what could be a fungal issue. (the symptoms you find on the net are pretty wide ranging) Regardless I am back to Danactive yogurt shots and acidophilus caplets to keep the risk down. This also helps with IBS, normal stools, and acid reflux. No white spots on tongue or throat, but good to keep your good bacteria up. I do have a tongue scraper and it does work well. Not bad to gargle with 1/2 water 1/2 peroxide once in a while for prevention.

So for my situation, I think it's a corabination of poor posture and tense muscles which can be worked out with PT and exercise. And I attribute some of it to sinus and allergy symptoms as I get more and more inflamation as I get older. This fall has been extra bad for sinus where I live.

Sucks getting old - I hate it.

Anonymousinsc......do you mind posting your doctors' name (of PM me if that's not allowed). I live in NE Ga & am looking for a good doc....will travel. Learned my throat issues were GERD 1-1/2 yrs ago....then figured out LPR (my research) about 8 months ago. Been on several different PPI's with Zantac and still have symtoms. I'm on Nexium now 2xday w/Zantac at bedtime. Every night I have reflux to some degree, even tho bed is raised, diet is strict, etc. I'm at a loss. Thank you for sharing your docs name....I appreciate the help & support all of you share.
