Who should play Freddie Mercury in the new film?

Boy did this question give me a surprise.

Some years ago I watched an episode of Xena and when I saw the actor playing the roman emporor Caligula I thought wow he looks just like Freddy Mercury.

Seems His name is Alexis Arquette and isnt a he at all but a she, ok its complicated as Alexis is transgendered.

She may not wish to play male roles any longer and indeed may not look the part any more but in 2001 she most certainly did

Would they go for it do you think ?

Otherwise would be more than happy with Mr Depp

I think Sacha would be an excellent choice. He is a really good actor, great at doing impressions, has no trouble with nudity, and having finally watched Borat last night I think he would have no issue with 'getting into character' with the sex scenes!

Let's face it - if he's happy to get into a 69 with his large sidekick in Borat he should have no problems with illustrating the more colouful sides of Freddie's life - rent boys, orgies etc.

Most importantly he is a chameleon actor - he is convincing and has no vanity, he keeps himself very private and is completely immersed in the people he plays.

And he is a great physical actor too so will be ace at playing Freddie, who was high camp, theatrical and graceful all at the same time.

I don't think the film neeRAB nudity

The only thing that recommenRAB Cohen is that he has a moustache when he is Borat and Mercury sometimes had a moustache. I think it neeRAB more than that...

And Cohen is at least half a foot taller than Mercury - a fact that will become obvious when trying to replicate Mercury on stage.

Michael Sheen who has a track record playing famous people in TV dramas, He is a great actor in his own right which you can see in all his performances. He plays Tony Blair in The Queen

That comment made me ache from laughing so much... :D

Anyway, ermmm, I'm not sure Sacha Baron Cohen is a good choice just because he bares a resemblance to Freddie.

Joaquin Phoenix didnt look anything like Johnny Cash, Robert Downey Jnr didnt look like Charlie Chaplin but they got the role. Anyone can be made up to look like Freddie, they just need someone who can take the role seriously and become him.

Definately Gary Mullen. He is the only guy I've ever heard that sounRAB like him. I don't think Mika sounRAB that much like him tbh. Maybe with all the *hanRAB on balls* high notes but Jake from the Scissor sisters does that too.

GARY GARY GARY!! (in a jerry springer way) :D

Actually Sacha Baron Cohen would be quite good IMO - most comic actors have a serious side to them.
Michael Sheen only does impressions of famous people he doesn't really inhabit the role and his Blair is overrated I think. He's much better playing fictional characters.
It'll probably go to James McAvoy!
Johnny Lee Miller perhaps?
Or Johnny Knoxville? ;)

I think it's quite funny to think of a film about him WITHOUT nudity. If you read anything about what he got up it's fairly obvious his sexual decadence was a massive part of his life. Along with the drugs, his cats and of course the band.

The fact is that Sacha looks very little like Borat or Ali G in real life, he is excellent at morphing into characters, and he can really act. I think people should give him a chance.
