Who should be in The Hobbit?

Romour is that the casting of Bilbo will be announced next week at Comicom. Coincidentally David Tennant is to appear there, for the first time. He's one of two serious contenders for the part along with my personal choice, James McAvoy. Daniel Radcliffe is an outside possiblity but surely he's far too young and still has the final 2 HP films to finish off.

Well, I have to admit, I have not spoken to a great many Dragons, so my view is somewhat uninformed. However, anatomically, I am reasonably sure that a creature with a long neck would have a very high pitched voice due to the acoustically qualities of the position on the vocal corRAB in said neck. A giraffe's voice, for instance, is so high pitched that even most dogs can't hear it. I'm sure a passing biologist will be able to verify this, though. (yes, I'm making this up in a deperate attempt to defend my position). ;)

Blimey, now David Tennant could be a good choice. Would James McAvoy's Bilbo be too close to Mr Tumnus (one's a faun and the other is a hobbit admittedly although both have hairy feet). Nah, come to think of it I think both will be great in the role.

I hope PJ does direct The Hobbit. The LOTR films were just amazing and it'd be hard for another directer to create something similar which it would have to be.

But no matter who directs it Sir Ian McKellen just HAS to be Gandalf. No one else should ever play that part.

Not sure about Bilbo, wish Sir Ian Holm could do it but he probably couldn't since it's a younger Bilbo. Whoever does do it should be able to do an Ian Holm performance though.

I don't think they should have any LOTR actors in Hobbit roles too. It'd be okay if they were in a few scenes or something but I don't think they should be one of the dwarves or anything.

Not sure about Smaug..hmmm....Alan Rickman does sound quite good.

I don't think Tennant's right for Bilbo. He's too tall for a start. He neeRAB to look the right height against the dwarves. Also, it makes no sense for continuity, he's a lot taller than Ian Holm.

According to BBS news web-site today, Bob Shaye, NL co-chairman, told Sci-Fi Channel that there was no way Jackson would ever get to make The Hobbit.

Basically he has accused Jackson of being greedy and not interested in a 'discussion' with NL over the film and the lawsuit.

Getting as bit personal!

Incredibly miffed about the news concerning the absence of Peter Jackson/Wingnut films, but as long as they keep Ian McKellen as Gandalf, ill be happy. He just is Gandalf, and his performance in the LOTR trilogy was amazing. Any actor would be lesser, and I think Sir Ian was really comfortable with Gandalf and it seems Gandalf was comfortable with him!

Just hoping another director/producer/writer has the stomach to take some risks and think outside the box like PJ did. For example when he saw the visual effects departments idea of the Pellenor ROTK battle, he said 'Good, but we could add some...', which of course left the team like '' but he just really pushed his team for amazing results and to go beyond what theyd be expected to. I think we can agree that it worked.

Personally I'd love Brian Blessed to be one of the dwarves. I can just imagine him in armour with a mace shouting 'FOR BALIN'. Though of course most of Brian Blessed's roles involve him wearing armour and shouting I suppose.

As far as Smaug's voice is concerned: if PJ was running this show then it would be a fair bet we would have Andy Serkis doing a voice as he did for a lot of the monsters (Most notably Gollum, Witch King, Lurtz too?). Im not decided on who should voice Smaug. Someone scary though.

As long as whoever plays Bilbo is in proportion to the rest of the cast i.e. the Dwarves, it shouldn't really matter. There's going to be a lot less forced perspective shooting on this film becuase the characters don't interact with the taller races as much as in LotR.

My money is still on JM. He's got a higher profile in the US & abroad generally and has done this sort of fantasy film before, filming in NZ. I still think he's a bit young for Bilbo myself, but I'm getting used to the idea.

Still really, really want to know who's going to voice Smaug, though. Rickman has my vote.

It's not spite. NL have the time on their contract slipping away. If PJ wont play ball, they have no choice but to press on without him or lose the project completely.

Looks like the NL / PJ relationship is souring even further. Doesn't look like either side are going to budge. At the moment the only reasonable outcome I can see would be for NL to offer the rights to PJ for a 'modest' sum (% of profits), if he agrees to drop his lawsuit.

An unreasonable but more likely outcome will be for NL to go it alone, without PJ/WETA etc... and most probably make a complete hash of it. :(

Personally I think Jackson will just go ahead and make 'Temeraire' instead, the rights of which he bought up last year. He's doing 'The Lovely Bones' this year and then most likely will shoot Temeraire next year. The way New Line are looking at things they want to shoot The Hobbit this year, which is pretty impossible for Jackson to pull off without dumping Lovely Bones (something he will NOT do considering they've already been working on it for a year).

If you don't know, Temeraire is the first in a potentially 6-part series (currently 4 parts) of novels set in the Napoleonic wars period but there's a fantasy twist to it in that dragons exist in the world. I'm currently reading the first book and it's not bad but not particularly excellent. I think it will need Peter to inject a lot of life into it, but the potential is there definitely.

that's the key,i honestly couldnt see these two films being half as good without PJ and everybody at wingnut films/weta involved,as as much as the hobbit and LOTR is tolkien's story,LOTR looked the way it did down to all the people who worked on the film(including PJ),so imho any other director and effects house doing these two films would result in a very similar but different recreation of middle earth

James McAvoy is perfect for this part. Itr has to be him

In regarRAB to the height thing - it doesn't matter as they alter it anyway with effects

James Mcavoy please :D

However it could all just be p*ssing in the wind whoever gets picked. I read the other day that there is a possibility that the Tolkien estate could have The Hobbit taken off New Line if there is no satisfactory outcome over the profits from LOTR trilogy
