Who should be in The Hobbit?

the only thing i can see happening is new line and mgm will argue over if Peter
Jackson gets directing duties up until the last minute because if the rights revert back to saul zaentz i reckon mgm and PJ would bid for them to make both films seperate to new line cinema, which would wind them up no end

Yep Ian McKellen as Gandalf is the only necessity for me. They can even change the director, at least we might then get better characterisation, and the film mght be more Tolkienesque with less of the Big Hollywood Picture feel.

Even if Ian Holm doesn't actually play Bilbo I think he should have a wee part as older Bilbo. I like Assa2's idea.

Hoping that Ian McKellen will still play Gandalf even if it's another directer. Same with Andy Serkis and Gollum.

Really sad PJ isn't doing it. Can anyone pull it off?:(

i thought the prequel (not the hobbit) would be about Aragorn huntin Gollum and/or his story of growing up, the storys of Boromir and Faramir growing up, stuff about Gandalf and the White Council and Sarumans fall into evil or the Dark side...

i'm not decided on if i want p.j 2 do the films though... as long as they r amazing and stay true to tolkien and sir iain mckellan does Gandalf i dont really care...

I remeber an interview with McKellen about some other filem, may have been X-Men 3, but he was aksed about Ganfalf / The Hobbit. His answer basically was that it was his role and he'd not let anyone play the role unless ofcourse he was dead.

Brian Blessed as one of the dwarfs...? Maybe not.

For me the most interesting peice of casting would be the voice for Smaug. Alan Rickman perhaps?

Absolutely! :) And a sarcastic Smaug would be hilarious. :D

I would love to see Sir Ian reprise his role as Gandalf. That is the only must I have really.

Andy Serkis to play Gollum again - yes.

It's a shame that Sir Ian Holm would be too old - I loved him as Bilbo.

I would not really like to see the LotR actors coming back for the Hobbit who would be playing different characters - it wouldn't work imho. Oh and not Hugo Weaving as Elrond either - I was very disappointed by his portrayal in LotR.

It's a while since I read The Hobbit but I'm thinking that Aragorn is in it? If so then definitely Viggo to come back.

I know i'm going to sound really anal now but the Nazgul in Dol Guldur was called Khamul. Also called the Black Easterling. He was second in command among the Nazgul after the Witch King of Angmar.

The Witch King was based at Minas Morgul and Khamul at Dol Guldur.

As for the hobbit movie and a prequel:

If John Rhys Davies was going to be in it, why not as Beorn? Then again Brian Blessed would be good in that role too.

Beorn was my favorite character in The Hobbit. Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf of course and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

I can see Legolas making a cameo appearance in The Hobbit because he was a Mirkwood Elf.

I think that most of the cast should be fairly unknown. I only knew of a handful of LOTR actors before the movies came out and The Hobbit, like LOTR should be an ensemble piece and not a vehicle for a big name.

I'd be upset if Peter Jackson doesn't make the movie because I'd worry that without him and WETA, it wouldn't be done so well.

Now that we have the LOTR trilogy to enjoy, we can see Middle Earth on film and I for one don't want to see someone else's interpretation. The books are connected and the movies should be too. One thing I loved about LOTR was that the movies followed Tolkiens descriptions of the locations so well. So my mental image of the locations of Middle Earth weren't damaged by the film version. For example Minas Tirith was just as I had imagined it to be, as was Mordor. The only place that didn't fit quite with me was Lothlorien.

I'm unsure as to what they could do about a second movie. The Silmarillion is too complex to film. Unfinished Tales is very fragmented on paper and again too complicated to shoot.

I'd be concerned if someone decided to write a brand new story set between The Hobbit and LOTR unless it was a writer with a passion for Tolkiens books and a thorough understanding of Middle Earth and its lore and history.

Nope - Gandalf and the White Council ejected the Nazgul (I think it was the Witch-King) out of Dol Guldur in 2941 according to the book but Sauron took it back ten years later.

Elrond is not a big character so Hugo Weaving should not detract from your enjoyment of the film, assuming he reprises his role. The Elves in The hobbit are very different from those in LotR, so it will be interesting how that is handled.

I don't recall Aragorn being in The Hobbit, and am not exactly sure of the timeline, but I suppose he could have been around in Rivendell when Bilbo passed through. Given the way LotR was re-written for the films it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Aragorn would turn up and perhaps have more than just a cameo appearance.

In my view there is only ONE person that can play Thorin Oakenshield and that is Brian Cox (he's been in countless films and TV shows like Troy, The Bourne Identity, X-Men but maybe he'll always be remembered for playing Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter). They might want to cast an unknown as Bilbo, but they certainly need someone who can do a similar performance to Ian Holm's. It would have been good if John Rhys-Davies could have played the dwarf Gloin (who's Gimli's father) but considering how painful the Dwarf makeup was for him I doubt he'd do it.

Its quite telling that New Line haven't released a press statement. I am speculating that they didn't anticipate PJs response and are busy trying to correct it. Well I hope so anyway!

Financially it makes no sense for anyone other than PJ / Wingnut / Weta to make these films. A huge proportion of the $270 mil budget for the LotR films was spent on pre-production - set/props production, artistic development and the development of the CG technology i.e. Massive. Although mush of the sets were destroyed afterwarRAB and props sold off, the expertise to make them and more, aswell as the CG know-how is all there so costs would be much lower. It would be interesting to know who owns the rights to the designs, New Line or PJ? PJ still has the Bag End sets as he couldn't bear to see them broken up. Any film needing big battle scenes i.e Alexander or Kingdon of Heaven, now uses Massive. How much would Weta bump up the price of New Line went for another director?

The prequel is supposed to fill the gap between The Hobbit and LotR, showing what Gandalf, Aragorn & Gollum were up to. Can't see how that would work though as there's not much in the way of dramtic plot to follow. With a bit of license they could make a good story out of Gandalf et al confronting Sauron in Mirkwood - say Aragorn was there etc... Personally I'd like to see how Balin and his Moria dwarfs met their end.
