Well, Verizon has better coverage so I would say Verizon and ATT has good phones but not great reception.

All these competitive commercials back and forth make me really wonder who is better? I know AT&T has a faster 3G network, but Verizon has more coverage for a 3G network. But overall who is THE better phone company?

It really depends on where you live. This is a Coke vs. Pepsi question, you will never get a straight honest answer as everyone has had different experiences. The best phone company is going to be the one that services you the best. Look at coverage maps and ask around to see what people say.
For example, I have AT&T on my personal phone and haven't had any problems but an occasionally dropped call. But with the phone that my job provided me I have Verizon and have the worst service where I live. I frequently cannot get through or find a signal.But I have friends who live elsewhere and get fantastic coverage with Verizon. Don't believe the commercials or the ads, they usually are just trying to slam one another. Do your research and look at what would be the best company around.
If you live in an area that is well covered by both of them then look at prices and what type of phone you want. If you want an iPhone then your only option is AT&T, or if you want a phone with a Google operating system then you would have to go with Verizon.

sure. at&t...it's got the iPhone...it's faster...and is self proclaimed "the better 3G experience"...
but does a few seconds of better speed really matter?
no. what matters is coverage.
and with that, verizon is much better.
i personally think that its only good phone is the iPhone.
all the other cheaply made sliders just don't appeal to me at all.
& i would constantly get dropped calls with at&t.
i think verizon is the more popular network,
and has MUCH more coverage, less dead zones.
what good is a high tech smart phone,
when you can't even get any service?
all my at&t, sprint, t-mobile, etc. friends
complain all the time about their coverage.
i totally disagree with people saying
at&t makes better phone.
smart phones, sure, i'll give them that....
but verizon has the enV line,
the Dare, voyager, droid, alias...those
are the most popular where i live.
