The cartoon series was created by Ruby-Spears, correct? and that company was purchased by Turner with Hanna-Barbera, correct? So why do the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies air on Toon Disney??
Yes, Ruby-Spears had animated the first four seasons of Alvin and the Chipmunks (1983-1987). Lorimar-Telepictures had distributed 65 episodes of Alvin & The Chipmunks. This included some DiC produced episodes (about 11). Warner Communications had bought Lorimar-Telepictures in 1989, resulting in them having ownership of Alvin and the Chipmunks (All the Ruby-Spears seasons and a few DiC episodes). The movies aren't owned by Warner Bros. at all. Universal owns the movies. Just like the recent 2007 movie, it's owned by News Corporation's Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Regency Enterprises.
Oh yeah, Alvin and The Chipmunks was on Nickelodeon before Time Warner bought Turner, resulting them to take Alvin to CN in 1998.
The Chipmunks Franchise itself:
Bagdasarian Productions (also producers of all things Chipmunk)
The Alvin Show:
CBS Paramount Television (originally owned by Viacom until the dimerger resulting into any non-MTV Networks-owned Viacom products are now a part of CBS Paramount Television)
A Chipmunks' Christmas:
Chuck Jones Enterprises
Alvin and the Chipmunks:
Warner Bros. Entertainment (production and syndication)
The Chipmunk Movie:
Paramount Pictures (after purchasing the film's original distributor back in the 1990s)
The Chipmunks (the renamed/redesigned Alvin and the Chipmunks):
Warner Bros. Entertainment (syndication of first season), Paramount Home Video (video distributor of episodes, including the final season, Chipmunks Go To The Movies)
Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet . . . series of movies:
Universal Animation Studios
Alvin and the MiniMunks (live-action):
Bagdasarian Productions . . . don't worry, many people didn't see it either. They're babies . . . and puppets.
Alvin and the Chipmunks (live-action):
Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Entertainment
So, when are we going to get episodes from the original series on DVD?
So far, only 'Alvin and the Chipmunks go to the Movies' and 'The Chipmunk Adventure' have been released on DVD, along with a few direct-to-DVD movies in 1998.
Since Alvin & Chipmunks used covers from actual artists such as Madonna, Micheal Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, etc, during the Ruby Spears episodes, licensing pretty close to 100 songs is going to cost WB quite a bit.
Unless they edit the show and put in public domain/cheaper to license songs, which will pretty much result in turning fans away from the show's release.
I think by "original series" he/she meant "The Alvin Show" from the 60s. That one would not be a problem at all since the songs in that series consist entirely of Chipmunk originals (including the pre-Chipmunk novelty song Witch Doctor), and public domain songs.
