Who owns a quote - the person who said it, or the person/newspaper they gave it to?

I'm a student at a college. I was on the newspaper staff there for four years. I'm not anymore, but I still cover some campus issues in my blog.

I quoted a guy regarding an issue and posted it in my blog. I noticed that quote was then in the student newspaper. I asked the person who gave me the quote and he told me that the reporter asked if he could use the quote on my blog. He gave the reporter permission.

My question is - who should that reporter have asked for permission? Would that quote become mine after it was given to me? Or does the person saying the quote retain ownership?
