My team has played 2 seasons when they were NOT known as the Steelers. What name(s) did they play as, when, and why would they do that. 1st with the correct answer wins!
 
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles merged together to become the Steagles during WW2. They did this because the players were joining the army to fight in the war.
 
The Steagles in 1943 (combined Eagles and Steelers) and in 1944(Chicago Cardinals and Steelers)
 
phil-pitt steagles, 1943-1944 i think, world war 2 took the players, combined eagles and steelers.

EDIT-sbquartet said pirates first and then i put my answer and so did others with the right answer, and then she changed hers so i am just saying that i had the right answer first.
 
The Steelers played as the Phil-Pitt Steagles. Rooney merged his team with future NFL commish Bertie Bell's as WWII was stripping players from the field. And then they swapped franchises, so the Steelers just became the Eagles for a while, but they were basically known as the Steagles. This was from about 1943-1945. Is this right? I read about this a while ago, so my memory might not serve me well.
