Who Invented the First "In" Joke?

Production-staff inside jokes and "gag" references have been a cartoon cliche fro decades now. Crewmembers' names are buried in the painted backgrounds or mentioned in the dialogue of some episodes. Caricatures of in-house staff are sprinkled into others.

But one question bugs me--where did this tradition originate from? My original guess was Termite Terrace, the Warner Bros. cartoon studio, but I am not sure. Where do you think the in-joke originated from?

I'd wager good money that the first ever in-joke was scrawled onto some cave wall with a piece of charcoal sometime during the Pliocene.
