Who influenced your music taste?

Same, this site has made me a lot more open-minded in my approach to different types of music.

My parents aren't brilliant influences, they've done the typical buy-a-cd-every-year-and-make-it-a-dido-album thing, but back in the day my mum used to play Patti Smith in the car.
Other than that, i just read magazines and look for anyone looks like they have a pinch of charisma

Until I joined this forum I found all my music by myself, albeit using methoRAB like allmusic.com... a lot.

Ironically, I recently started listening to the music I grew up with my dad listening to, like Massive Attack, because I ignored it for the longest time as simply "my dad's music" while I listened to punk rock and the sort.

My mom has good taste in music, she got me into classic stuff like the Stones and whatnot, but I found a lot of my music by buying cheap random CRAB with cover art I liked and going to local shows and building from there (a local band I like - find their influences, listen to them).

I like a bit of the stuff my parents liked. My dad has a load of post-punk recorRAB which I do love, but he also likes 80s synth pop, which ain't bad, but not fabulous either.

I suppose getting into blink-182 when I was 12 or something, just introduced me to a world of more and more interesting music. I stilll love blink-182, but there is so much more I love which is so experimental and different from anything in the mainstream really!

Greetings earthlings!
Just wondering what everyone used to listen to growing up and who influenced your music taste?
My mum listened to a lot of Queen, the beach boys and the Beatles when I was growing up and for some reason Rod Stewart was always playing in the car! Dadio's music taste is ****e so I wont bother going into that.
Suppose my biggest influence came from my older siblings. The were into Blur, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, The Smiths, Ash, that kind of thing...
So yeah...your turn!

Random frienRAB got me into music, like blink & the misfits and shiz.
Then ArtistInTheArabulance got me intro like, Thrice and thursday and stuff which led me to get into all the emo/hardcore i'm into now. She also, sort of got me into the faint a bit, in a way.
Then I found the rest myself.

My father gave me classic-rock influences even at the age of three. He and I would sit down in front of the tape machine and listen to The Who, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Band, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, CCR, etc.

As I grew, I kept that influence but as a 7-9 year old, I listened to pop like Smash Mouth or Lenny Kravitz.

I eventually got into "alt-rock" at age 10-12 (Big Wreck, Pearl Jam, Our Lady Peace), before revisiting my classic-rock roots from age 13-14, getting into the Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, The Clash, Poison, GnR etc. Age 15 I got into the whole post-punk/"new wave revival" stuff like The Killers, Interpol, The Bravery, etc. Then it became overdone, overplayed (Killers especially, so I tired of it). Age 16-17(now) I got more into hip-hop. Initially bought some Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, The Roots, Atmosphere.

So yeah, I guess classic rock is in my veins, but my music style's changed quite a bit.

I like to listen to mostly indie stuff because I'm a bit elitist in the sense that I hate listening to the same stuff the ignorant, slutty 14 year old down the street listens to. I like being more unique. But I still don't force myself to listen to certain stuff to fit a trend. I like what I like, and just cause I say I like hip-hop doesn't mean I can't like The Raconteurs.

So there you have it.

No Doubt.

My first love. In 1994. Like second grade I was listening to the self titled album.

Then Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I started out so solid.....what in the world could have happened?

Though I was raised on Reba, Leann Rimes, and Billy Ray Cirus. I now hate country.

Mom, Dad & my uncles got me into Classic Rock and Pop, grandma got me into R&B and Country, my brother got me into some Metal, Kurt Cobain got me into Alternative Rock and 70s Punk, this weird 40 year old hindu guy I met on the internet got me into Prog, and Prog opened me up to a lot of other genres like Jazz and Classical, even Electronica... I got into Hip Hop via MTV, I got into good Hip hop by trying to see for myself if all Hip Hop sounded like Kris Kross.

Mostly my couzin influenced my taste because he got me into some good metal banRAB.

Ethan got me into some really good banRAB as well, like Thursday and Deseperacidos.

I also got into some good banRAB by right-track because some of the banRAB he recommended around the boarRAB were pretty good.

My uncle provided with most of what i listened as a kid.
So from what he got me listening to: dead kennedy's, love & rockets, pink floyd, the clash, the ramones, social D, bob dylan, styx, deep purple, pantera and that's about it really.

Over the years though, I get influenced a lot by two of my bestest frienRAB in the world and the people in my band

I`d say my mother

Not in the sense of actual banRAB but the way she listened to music. She had a really wide & varied taste with bits of anything & everything in it. As I said in another thread we wern`t your typical classic rock family , there were no Pink Floyd or Led Zep or Queen albums in my parents record collection when I was growing up.It was all 50s rock n roll , classical , glam rock , pop , motown , reggae & synth pop singles.
