It took until 2001 for a Best Actress award in the Academy Awards to be awarded to a Black woman and that was Halle Berry in the movie "Monsters Ball".
Denzel Washington won that same night for his role in "Training Day" He was the second. Sidney Poitier was the first for his role in the movie in "Lilies of the Field" in 1963. Jamie Foxx followed later on for his role as Ray Charles in the movie "Ray".
The very first Oscar was presented to Hattie McDaniel for her role as Mammy in "Gone With The Wind" in 1939. She got a Best Supporting Actress Award and then that was a big deal. The second one wasn't awarded until 1982 when Lou Gossett Jr. got a Best Supporting Actor Award for his role as Sgt Foley in "An Officer and a Gentleman" then Denzel Washington in 1989 for his role in "Glory" followed by Cuba Gooding Jr for his role in "Jerry McGuire".
