Who goes on the right and who on the left in terms of bride and groom friends?

friends of the bride on the left (as you stand at the back looking towards the front) and friends of the groom of the right.

As the bride and her father walk up the aisle - the bride walks on the lefthand side (along her family/friends side) and her father on the right. This tradition came about because as the father of the bride walked his daughter up the aisle he would have his sword on his left hip and if any of the grooms relatives or friends tried any funny business he could pull out his sword with his right hand and defend her.
 
It does vary, but in a traditional "American" wedding (although you can do whatever you darn well please), the bride is escorted down the aisle with her father on her right. The bridesmaids will already be at the front lined up on the left (if you're looking at the altar from the congregation), and the groom and groomsmen on the right. The father of the bride will stand there until the officiant asks "who gives this bride", at which point he generally answers "her mother and I do", after which he takes his seat on the front row.
 
I got married in a catholic church and i stood to my dad's left when going up the aisle and when you were facing the front of the church, the bridal party was on the left and the groomsmen were on the right. The last wedding i was at was lined up this same way too and that was in a methodist church.
