In India, they actually translate those shows to the local language and screen it, in addition to evangelists who speak in the local languages, 24 * 7 on dedicated channels. The number of such channels has been steadily increasing and now I guess there should be 10 or so of them !

Yes, televangelism is a sham.
I saw a documentary about a company specializing in organizing the affairs of infomercial companies. A lot of their biggest clients were televangelists. They wouldn't name them specifically, of course, but they did make that clear.
In one scene, there's a conveyer belt of donations coming in and being sorted. There was a row of $100 bills just pouring in to be stacked and boxed for some televangelist.
What to say? There's one born every minute. If they don't rake it in, some other snake oil salesman will. As long as people are willing to believe someone out there has all the answers, this sort of thing will exist.
