Try oven roasting thick slices of turnip (no need to peel), coated in
garlic flavored EVOO. Soooo delicious!

Details to follow (tomorrow).

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.

My mom once made a big bowl of mashed turnips or rutabaga. I'm not sure
which. I think I was about 3 at the time. I took a big helping of it
despite the fact that she tried to warn me that it wasn't mashed potatoes.
In the end, I was not pleased!

If I ever had cooked turnips since then, I don't remember. Perhaps I had a
few pieces in a soup.

I do love raw ones. My maternal grandparents had a farm. They grew them.
There is a picture of my grandpa holding a big turnip in one hand and a
pocket knife in the other. We grandkids were all jumping up and down around
him waiting for slices.

Two secrets if you're growing parsnips. One, you wait until the first
frost before harvesting - only then do they sweeten up. Two, dig them
up when they're small - the big ones are woody. Words of wisdom from

I will look. Most of the root vegetables were pretty young... I was
disappointed on Sunday because the person who sells the baby braising

Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

That sounds to me like a white carrot not a parsnip.

On the one hand parsnips are one of my very few strong food dislikes
yet I like carrots. They taste extremely different to me.

On the other hand I think white turnips and yellow rutties taste very
similar but there are folks who hate one and like the other.

I can imagine someone thinking carrots and parsnips taste similar
because I know to me turnips and rutties taste similar. Okay, parsnips
it is. Maybe.

Check. I go to farmers markets but I don't do it as entertainment. If
I want entertainment I'll probably go to Sur La Table. Chuckle. I'm in

I can appreciate the parsnip dislike. Until a few years ago I had only
had them boiled and I hated them. Hated. Then I had roasted parsnip and
it was not only palatable, but actually very tasty. Roasted parsnips
started being served up regularly around here. I got brave and tried
boiled parsnip...... horrible. Roasted good.... boiled awful.

I like carrots raw, stir fried or roasted. I will eat them boiled but
don't much care for them that way.
