Who do u think is the best bassist

I do too, i wasn't generalizing about the whole movement, i like most britpop banRAB, it's just certain popular banRAB who do nothing but imitate a banRAB style, instead of doing their own thing... Thats my problem with Oasis, i own Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants, i dig it, but more or less they're The Beatles with Syd Barret-esque vocals, nothing more, plus liking some of their music dosent really change my opinion about Noel and Liam being the most arrogant/pretentious jerks to ever become involved in the music business... And if theres anything worse than Noel and Liam putting Oasis on the same level as The Beatles, it would be Oasis fans doing the same thing.

Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse is a phenominal bass player. It's just not all about talent, sometimes its about flair and presance, and thats one thing for me that Claypool lacks IMO I mean, he's talented sure, but his licks don't make the hair stand up on the back of my neck, whereas Cliff, Webster do

I really enjoy Roger Waters bass playing with Pink Floyd, he may not be the best but his basslines are very enjoyable to play. Then we have Mike Watt and Peter Hook who I also extremely enjoy their playing. Lest I forget the likes of Paul Charabers, Bob Cranshaw, Scott LaFaro and Charles Mingus who were also very influencial and favourites of mine.

Me too, but what makes a great song can vary.... It's not just some standard rock n roll fair with 2 minute songs... A verse/chorus/verse anthem with gibberish lyrics, a one note bassline, a guitar solo that mimics the chorus melody and a handclap section isn't all that consitutes a good song, open your eyes, theres much more to music than that... Listen to some classical or jazz, if you seriously consider it all wanking crap, then it seems that you have little appreciation for the evolution of music. :-/

Well, when it is needed is all according to the songwriter, the listener just decides what they like and what they don't like... Whos to say a complex solo passage deviates from what the songwriter originally wanted?

Now this may be my pop upbringing talking here but as far as i`m concerned the songs are the most important thing.

If i`ve got a bass player who wants to show off all the time rather than making the songs sound good i`ll fire the bastard.

People remeraber songs not technical ability and wanking over your instrument.

I agree. Solo's do not make or break a song they simply enhance them just like a good riff would. But that's the thing solo's do not make or break a song and, before you seemed to have implied that solos=bad and are just musicians showing off having big heaRAB that I don't agree with. You don't have to like it, just see it as style that does have talent in it.

Since when in the hell is knowing how to actually play your f*cking instrument automatically wanking?

So... I guess you think Charles Mingus and James Jamerson are wankers then, thats pretty damn ignorant.

Steve Harris deserves FAR more respect then he gets, anywhere he's not only a superiror bassist in metal, but for any type of music, for that matter...

^Mhmm great bass player...Scott Clendenin from Death is a very good bass player...the bass solo to "Spirit Crusher" is just awesome
