I live in Missouri if it helps any. I work (or worked I should say) as a "host" at a privately owned steakhouse/bar/lounge. I am 20 years old, half African American half Caucasian, and am a victim of an employer mistreating their employee. For the last 3 weeks I have been scheduled for 1 day while the other hosts & servers are scheduled for a minimum of 3-4 days, and last week and this week I am not on the schedule at all.
Let me explain something fishy, my "boss" runs his business with his now fiancé (previously was a waitress, then got her pregnant, left his wife the whole sha-bang), he literally hits on every server/host, only hires women for the title of host, server, or bartender (ONLY SKINNY, "PRETTY" WOMEN), (men/not so pretty women can only cook). The host's job is to greet/seat customers & check them out, bus tables, janitor (scrub toilets), make sure the salad bar & buffet are kept spotless and constantly filled, and "assist" the server with their duties all AT THE SAME TIME for $7.25/hr NO TIPS. The host isn’t even allowed to touch the tips, because some of the servers accuse you of "stealing" their tip if you move it to clean the table underneath. Ever since I started my boss has treated me like I am not a person, talking to me as if I am 6 years old, curses at me, and literally gossips about me and everyone else who works there to customers/other employees. On multiple occasions I have gotten yelled at for no reason telling me that I'm not doing my job good enough, did something that someone else actually did, or did something wrong that I wasn’t even trained to do, etc. blaming me alone for things when there are 2 hosts working per shift & only I receive any grief. On my third day of working, I was training a new host when I still hadn‘t been properly trained!
Besides all of this, for this period that I have not been I scheduled I have called the restaurant several times, his personal cell phone number, and the personal cell phone number of his fiancé (the one who “makes the schedule” according to him), and he always ignores my calls, won’t call me back, conveniently not at the restaurant when I call or stop in. It’s Monday now and I haven’t gotten my paycheck from the week before & haven’t been told why I am not scheduled/fired.
If you are familiar with these type of situations please answer or drop me an email.
SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY, Thank you.
Equal opportunity employment is an issue, thank you for the helpful info. Discrimination is hard to prove I completely understand, but it is happening at this establishment.
Also when I started there was no handbook (polices against sexual harassment, etc), anything posted on the walls anywhere about OSHA, minimum wage, etc & I was literally trained for 1 day then yelled at on multiple occasions for doing my job "half assed" when I wasn't even trained.
Not telling an employee that they are fired or giving an explanation for it & avoiding phone calls? Sounds pretty unprofessional to me.
I forgot to mention that I only got a break to sit down in a 6+ hour shift 5-8 times in the 3 months I worked, otherwise I literally never got to sit down/take a break when the employees who smoke (95%) got a break at least 3-4 times in a 6 hour shift.
