Roaches like fish tanks for a couple reasons.
1- water and warmth. They love warm, humid areas and need the water to drink
2-food and minerals. They can feed off of any algea or food residue on the tank. They also eat any calcium or salt deposits.
The motor on your filter is a nice warm place and its close to food and water. I would not recomend spraying chemicals at all. You could put a couple roach traps near by, or get some of the gel bait. I've had great sucess w/ the gel in my home.
The next possible problem you could have is if a dying roach, full of pesticides were to fall into the tank and die. I'm not sure if it would be enough to affect the tank, but personally I never take that chance.
If it were me, I would use traps or gel, and watch the tank and make sure none die in the water. I would also keep lots of carbon and media bags handy to try to absorb any possible poisons that might get in the water via roaches.
