Who determines the sex of the pups?

I was talking to a breeder today and she said her female is notorious for throwing male pups... I always thought that the stud male is what determines the sex of the pups, like the male determines the sex of a human baby? Am I wrong?

You are correct, it is the male that determines the gender of the puppies.

I would be concerned about a breeder whose small breed b*tch is "notorious" for throwing a particular gender - that would suggest to me that she's had an awful lot of puppies - and who doesn't know this basic genetic fact.

All I can say is WOW! To some of these answers.

There are two sex chromosomes. Offspring receives one from each parent. The one that they get from the mother will always be X because chromosome pair that makes a female a female is XX. Males have an XY pair. A sperm can either be X or Y. Depending on whether the egg gets fertilized with an X or Y chromosome detemermines gender.

XX female
Xy male

In short, yes the male is the one who determines the sex of the offspring.
