Who are the most underrated actors?

I feel that Ginnifer Goodwin is underrated and dosen't snag as many main roles as some actress', like Alba, or Lohan. She was brilliant in Walk The Line and was overlooked and some actresses nominated for supporting actress, did not deserve it IMHO. I love her. She was great in WADWTH as the corky sidekick and I liked her in Mona Lisa Smile, but she was great in Walk The Line and I feel she was overlooked and is underrated.

Great question, Shr!

To me underrated is someone who has talent and is always a shoe in for a great performance but is overlooked or not given enough credit. Sometimes BECAUSE he/she is so reliable that people don't think twice in thinking (yes, I know it's redundant  ) how good they were in a particular movie or in a specific role because they're always good.

Nick Stahl took my attention in Disturbing Behavior. He was also very brilliant in Carnivale. I actually watched Sin City just because of him and Elijah Wood.

Leonardo Dicaprio... I mean I know he is also a household name, but come on the guy has done some some serious work and yet they go by him because he still looks so young.

Isn't that more like the person's under the radar, or not well known - rather than being underrated? For me if a person is underrated it would mean he/she has done good work, consistently, but has not been given due praise/recognition for his/her work.

I think that Jim Carrey is a very underrated as a serious actor - people only remember him for his roles in Ace Ventura and stuff like that, but he was amazing in ESOTSM - just the right mix of sad-sack and goofy charm, you can tell why a person like Kate Winslet's Clementine would fall for him, but get annoyed with him after a while - and was overlooked for the Oscar. But I think it also doesn't help that he's done so much slapstick comedy and so little serious drama that he has, inevitably, helped to cast himself in the stereotype of a slapstick actor.

I totally agree with whoever said Nick Stahl. I think he turned in one of the best performances in all of Sin City. That's saying a lot, with the cast that they had.

I happen to think that the entire cast of Boogie Nights is underrated, except for Mark Wahlberg, who I feel is overrated.

Most especially, though, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Julianne Moore. And of course, Don Cheadle.

I just saw Gone Baby Gone and I think Casey Affleck is an underrated actor. The guy was amazing.

Julie Benz, a wonderful actress, I recommend you see her in one of the movies shes in or watch Angel, the series :)

Jessica Cauffiel is so funny! I love her in the roles she plays, shes in quite a few well known films so look out for her ;)

Majandra Delfino, very talented actress.

Those are all I can think of but tell me what you think of them :)

Oh no, I am guilty of this! When I read that you wrote Kathy Baker, the image that popped into my mind is Kathy Bates :goof:

And underused.

At the risk of sounding like a Michael Jackson song, you're not alone! I get confused all the time with both threads. :D

Word about Giovanni Ribisi!

underrated no more........what the critics are saying about philip seymour hoffman's performance in 'capote'......

I always think it's intriguing when people list actors who are totally big-profile, and list them as underrated.

So, what does that actually mean? How are we defining "underrated?"

Heath Ledger - If you are hot and have a pretty face you can't be a good actor....wrong. He is a very good actor but he must struggle to get good scripts because he is young and good looking. It's hard for young actors sometimes to be consider serious.

Christian Bale - I watched some of his movies and he was great in every single one. In "Batman begins" he totally ruled, not only he gave the best Batman performance I've seen but also the best superhero one.

Dominic Monaghan - Sometimes called "the hobbit dude" but apart from LOTR he has given some great performances in Lost. I hope he gets good movie roles because he seems to be able to play anything.

Don Cheadle is amazing. Everytime I see a movie with him in it, he's playing a completely different type of character.

I totally agree about James Mcavoy. He's one of my favorite actors. If you like what he's done, you should also get around to watching "Inside I'm Dancing". It's simply.. beautiful. And he definitely delivers in that one too.

Let's see... Who else? Um: Jude Law (he's an amazing actor but he's just getting negative attention for the 'ol Sienna thing, which is a damn shame), Joaquin Phoenix (he's still underrated), Christian Bale (not getting nearly enough of the attention he should be getting for his work).

Oh, and: Giovanni Ribisi, Ryan Gosling, Jim Caviezel, and many many more.
