Who are the biggest consumers of technology/gadgets?

It is the stereotype to label new gadgets on the market as 'boys toys' but is there any truth behind this claim that men prefer technology to women?
Has there been any research done on this subject to find out who (men or women, older or younger) enjoys the use of technology or gadgets more?
I am interested in this subject.
