Who are some people in the news who are making a difference in society?

I have to do research on a person in the news who has overcome some obstacle and is now giving back to society. A good example would be Obama, however, someone is already researching him. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. The person does not have to be from just politics but could be from music or movies or could even be an author
 
Bill Clinton was abused by his step father when he was young, grew up in a racist society. He was president of the US and during his terms he did a lot to help the low class, and in particular african americans. Recently he is involved on many projects to help people in Africa by creating self-sustainable economies. He also tries to encourage volunteering in America and is constantly doing humanitarian work to help Americans in other countries (example: the 2 american girls stuck in North Korea.)
