Who almost always impresses you....

Last week I watched the beginnig of A Cock And Bull Story and was again very pleasantly surprised by Shirley Henderson.

She almost always impresses me.

Anyone else?

Morgan Freeman, John Malkovitch, Johnny Depp for their versatility.

Sean Connery for his most consistent performances as Sean Connery, in a huge range of roles, following in the footsteps of Charlton Heston as Charlton Heston and John Wayne as John Wayne.

Judy Dench (naturally)
Julie Walters
Ewan McGregor (I do not count the SW prequels... ever!)
Patrick Stewart
Ian McKellen
Brad Pitt (suprisingly!)
Elijah Wood
Robert Downey Jnr (recent work)
Nicole Kidman

Al Pacino
Denzel Washington
Dustin Hoffman
Glenda Jackson
Jack Nicholson
Johnny Depp
Judi Dench
Katharine Hepburn
Meryl Streep
Morgan Freeman
Robert De Niro
Tommy Lee Jones

I was nearly going to list a few (three women, three men), but then I changed my mind and picked one out my bunch.

I was going to mention Michelle Pfeiffer, Linda Hamilton and Patricia Arquette. All three I like to see in films.

Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Uma Thurman (late 90s flops aside, though she did the best she could out of bad material), Samuel L Jackson, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham-Carter.

I know everyone is saying it, but I have to say Johnny Depp as well, greatest of his generation by far.

I have these pre-conceived ideas of Leo Dicaprio as more of a "heart-throb" star, rather than a good actor, but I can't think of a film where he hasn't put in a great performance. (haven't seen Titanic!)
