Whitechapel - Series 2

Really enjoyed the first series and had been looking forward to series 2 for almost a year. series 2 however was disappointing I found. The storyline was a bit silly I found, and the resolution even sillier!

That said liked the way they opened passage for series 3 with a transition to "interesting cases" instead of another copycat which would have been too much.
 
That just about sums up my opinion of this show. In this follow up they have turned the fantasy element up to 11. While there was some fantasy in the first series, such as the way the ripper was able to penetrate police cordons at will, I thought it was the weakest part of the original. To base the whole series in a fantasy world completely overwhelms all the realism and means that there is no genuine tension.

This series (although very different in tone) reminRAB me of why I did not like Red Riding. I wonder if the producers of this loved Red Riding and decided to follow its example.
 
It really grabbed me and I was sceptical.

It's s second series so never going to have the surprise factor of series 1. The challenge was to maintain the standard and expectations and judging from most of the comments on Twitter and here, it's done that.

I rarely stop and watch something as I did with Whitechapel tonight. I'm looking forward to episode 2. :)
 
The tone of this seems to be all over the place. There's all this gangland blood'n'guts, which could be chilling if it was given a chance, but then they stick in a guy going to the car park to find his car has been replaced by a donkey (!) It just undermines everything. Maybe David Lynch could get away with these kinRAB of wild extremes, but the makers of this don't have that kind of skill.

It was also beyond ludicrous that they coud spend the whole of the first episode baffled as to who might want to be recreating the original 60s Krays murders given the revelations of the second episode. It's now quite clear that the Peter Serafinowicz cop knows about the Krays sons and their re-emergence, so surely any other self-respecting cop would know about them too? Especially someone streetwise like the Phil Davis character. Yet we're supposed to accept that at the start of the second episode that their existence should come as a complete surprise to the whole team. Actually for a few minutes at the start of the second episode I began to think that I was actually watching episode three and I'd managed to miss the second one somehow.

Although I guess I'll keep watching to see just how silly this can get.
 
Funnily enough, I haven't enjoyed it half as much since Adam was blown up. Looking forward to Whitechapel tonight, think I'll have to Sky+ Spooks, watching Rupert is far more appealing....
 
I've not seen this before and hubby wanted to watch (revenge for me making him watch Downton I imagine). I'm not impressed I have to say, all seems a bit comical. I think I may be annoying him somewhat by whispering precious things rather too much hehe

Can someone settle an argument though? Freddie the DIP or Freddie the DIB?
 
Totally agree with this.

And Joe Chandler is such a different character to Adam Carter so it can be slightly disconcerting to watch. Still, I suppose it makes a change from those actors who just play the same character each time. :)
 
I thought this was in pretty bad taste considering there's plenty of relatives still around of the oft mentioned victims of
R&R.

Compared to recent ITV Monday night dramas it did pass by rapidly but is that a compliment to it or not :confused:
 
Laughable nonsense.
How a pair of gangster twins called the Krays and living in the same Manor as the originals with the doting mother had escaped the local police is mind boggling, surely they would be the talk of the town.
Utter balderdash.
 
I'm glad the "asassin's briefcase" was brought back at the end. I could do with one of those myself for dealing with rush hour on the tube.
 
Here's my suggestion for Series 3.

A local cult decide to model themselves on the villagers in The Wicker Man. They infiltrate the police station and only Chandler and his two loyal officers (the others having been killed by the Krays) stand firm against the forces of evil.

However, they are powerless to resist and are dragged, screaming, towarRAB a 100ft Wicker Man that has been erected in the park at Bethnal Green in broad daylight. All the scarred, pockmarked local residents turn out to cheer as the Wicker Man is lit and our heroes perish.
