President Barack Obama will nominate Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx as Transportation secretary on Monday, the White House confirms to POLITICO.
Foxx gained national attention for bringing the Democratic National Convention to the Queen City in 2012, and his transportation portfolio includes a new streetcar that broke ground under his tenure.

He announced recently that he was not running for reelection, fueling speculation he would be picked for the slot in Obama's Cabinet. He will take over from Ray LaHood, who has served four and a half years in the job and just presided over the standoff over air traffic control furloughs at the Federal Aviation Administration.
Once he is formally nominated, the Senate Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on his nomination. The full Senate needs to approve the pick; LaHood has said he would stay on until a successor is confirmed.
