Which Would Be The Best First Car? Saab? VW? Honda?

Okay so its not my first car, its actually my third...but its the first one I will be paying for. I commute to college 70 miles 3 days a week & I'm sick of getting 16mpg in my current car so I need a more fuel efficient car. I also live in VT so there's a lot of moose and deer and icy roads so the car needs to be safe and relatively good in snow (with good winter tires). And lastly I would like it to be reliable and last me through college with regular maintenance. So I have four possible choices, but I've gotten VERY mixed reviews and I'm confused which will be reliable, so they are: (all under $7000)
2003 or 2004 Saab 9-3 Linear 90-110k miles
1999-2003 Saab 9-5 80-100k miles
2000-2004 VW Jetta GLS 80-120k miles
and 2001-2003 Honda Civic EX 100-130k miles
I know the Civic is probably the most reliable and cheapest to maintain, but I'm just not as attracted to it and it doesn't have the "luxury" and safety features a Saab or VW have.
So any advice on which is the best would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
