Which Windows Mobile 6 smartphone ????

I am looking at the following phones, considering an upgrade when available. I currently use a Treo 650 for data and Real Estate applications, using Ir DA. I hate the Treo Phone. I use (and like) a Razr V3 for phone usage. I want one device to use for both data and phone. Possibilities I have found so far:

-Samsung SCH-i760
-Asus P526
-i-mate 9150
-Motorola Q q9
-i-mate 8150
-i-mate Jaq4
but I will consider (and would like to know about) others.

MUST HAVE:
-Ir DA
-Windows Mobile 6
-must work on Cingular

REALLY NEED:
-External ability to dial phone (external keypad) : i-mate 9150 flip is OK
-Text input either by touch screen or QWERTY keyboard (NOT dial pad input)
-GOOD phone capabilities, reception and performance
-Expansion memory card slot (type unimportant)
-320 x 240 resolution minimum

WOULD LIKE
-3G
-Wi-Fi
-thin (definitely under 20 mm)
-small (definitely under 70 x 125 mm (+/-)
-Touch screen (Q 9q has none)
-Good battery life

WOULD BE NICE
-GPS
-Bluetooth
-Scroll Wheel
-FM Radio
-Stereo headphone output

DON'T CARE
-camera and video specs are unimportant

What looks the best, so far, given what is known about the devices I have listed?

Windows Mobile 6 is not out yet, your guess on the release date is as good as mine.

The Moto Q (CDMA) and hte i730 (CDMA and iDen) won't work on the Cingular network. You need a GSM phone, either Cingular branded or an unlocked T-Mobile or other unlocked GSM device.

Thanks. I know WM 6 is not out yet, and this question is asking for a prediction or guess, but I was hoping to get info like you gave me. Thanks..

According to my data, the Moto Q q9 is GSM 900, 1800, 1900, and UMTS 2100. I'm not too sure what all of that means, but does that make it compatible with Cingular?

As you have stated, the Samsung SCH-i760 only works with CDMA800, 1900, 2000. I guess this means it will not work with Cingular? (Where, or for who does it work, out of curiosity?) That sort of sucks because it seems like it would be a great device, and was close to the top of my list.

Thanks, again...

If the Moto Q is GSM, then it should work on Cingular. If it isn't a Cingular phone, then it must be unlocked first. The only ones I know of are CDMA for Verizon and Sprint. But I am not that up-to-date on who has what right now.

CDMA is ether Verizon or Sprint. However, Verizon will not allow a non-Verizon phone on their network. Same with Sprint.

You have quite a list.

I can give you a few thoughts based upon my personal experience. Most real-estate software runs on palm powered handhelds and SmartPhones. This is something to consider and you may want to put a palm Powered PDA or SmartPhone on your list. Examples of the kinds of third party products I am thinking are:

Top Producer - www.topproducer.com
RealtyJuggler Real Estate Software - www.realorganized.com
Supra eKey - www.supraekey.com/

There are a few real estate software products that are on Pocket PC and Palm, like Act and Pocket Real Estate. But, I would recommend that you look at any vertical market software you are thinking of using first, to make sure you aren't limiting yourself.

I have one additional thought - the SmartPhone market has been quite sleepy over the past few years with advances in technology from one generation to another quite slow. I have a Treo 650 (which I love) and purchased it over 2 years ago. It seems identical to palm's latest offerings, and I really can't tell the difference.

I think this may change over the next 12 months however. This is due to Apple's iPhone. This device is clearly a leap forward. So much so that Palm (the company) is making signifigant changes in their company to respond and I have heard similar comments from Sony. So, I think that in 12 months - 2 years years, I believe SmartPhone technology will be dramatically different than it is today.

Disclaimer: I work for RealOrganized, Inc. The publisher of RealtyJuggler. We make real estate software products for both Pocket PC / Windows Mobile as well as Palm Powered SmartPhones.

SSchmitz99,

Thanks for your guidance. Your info is exactly what I needed. However, I am a little lost, and hope you will help. The Supre E-key program is what I am primarily interested in (thus my requirement for Ir DA). Supra has a list of approved Palm and smartphone devices it works with, but I am looking for a next generation device. I currently use my Treo 650 for the E-key software, but hate the size, and the phone...

My main question is:

Aren't all (any?) of the devices I mentioned in my list "smartphones", which should (presuming Windows Mobile 6 compatability) work with the E-key software? If not, what is the difference between the devices I have mentioned, and a "smartphone"?

Thanks!!!

The term SmartPhone is a generic one, and really only means that the phone has enhanced capabilities like an addressbook and datebook that can be synchronized and commercial software that can be purchased.

The main "SmartPhone" operating systems are Palm, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Symbian.

It can be real confusing because palm sells both Windows Mobile and palm Powered operating system on their phones. Nokia sells Symbian SmartPhones, although lots of other vendors sell Symbian phones as well.

It's just like video games. There's the Wii, X-Box-360 and Sony Playstation. Buy a game (software) for the Wii and it only runs on the Wii.

There's advantages to each different operating system, and I don't expect that there's going to be any single "standard". I believe they can all sync with Microsoft Outlook. Blackberry has the best e-mail capabilities. Palm Powered SmartPhones (think Treo) have the most real estate software for them. Windows Mobile phones have lots of software for them too, some of it real-estate oriented. One thing I like about Palm powered phones is that the display is 320x320, which is much larger than many Windows Mobile devices at 320x240.

The thing about vertical market software (like real-estate) is that it is extremely costly to develop to make the software work on multiple operating systems. So vendors pick and choose the operating systems, and sometimes even the individual SmartPhones that they support.

The company I work for has 2 real-estate products for Palm Powered SmartPhones (like the Treo 650) and 1 product for Windows Mobile. Most agents we talk with have something like the Treo 650. I think that's the most popular device for agents by far right now.

The supra eKey supports both Palm and Windows Mobile - BUT they only qualify the software on a limited number of specific devices. As a practical matter they can only test so many devices. So, if you do encounter a problem with a device not on the list... Well, you get the idea.
