My husband and I have a small Toyota and are expecting a baby in the next couple of weeks. We need to get baby's car-seat set up and ready, but aren't for certain where to place it. We know it needs to be rear-facing and in the back seat...but on which side? I read somewhere to put it in the middle but that is not an option. Wherever we put the seat, the seat in front of it will be impossible to sit in. We tried it behind the driver's seat and neither of us could fit behind the wheel. Same goes for the passenger seat- I never thought my legs were that long, but I was curled up with my knees on the dash. Our car isn't that small, it's a four door...I mean what on earth do other people do? Where do we put it???

It is best to put it in the middle, but you said that is impossible. So the next best place would be on he passenger side of the car. Reason being, it is less likely to be hit in the case of an accident.
My daughter is 5 years old and has a Britax Regent, it is a very large seat that has a 5 pt. harness up to 80lbs. She is on the passenger side of the car. My son has a Baby Trend infant carrier and he is in the middle seat. We have a Ford Escape.
A couple of things that you may not know:
Whenever you put the infant carrier into the car make sure that you put the handle back until it locks. (So that it is not in the upright position you use to carry the seat.) If you don't and get int an accident the handle can snap and stab the baby. It is fine to leave the shade hood up on the seat. And the other thing: When you put the child in the seat make sure that the chest clip is parallel with the baby's armpits.
It also might be a good idea to have your seat inspected to make sure that it is installed correctly. It is free and most police stations can do this for you. It takes more strength to tighten the base then you would think.

It's because of the car seat. Believe it or not, you can get a different brand car seat, that looks very much the same, and it will fit worse or better! My best advice would be to go to Toy's R Us, or Target, and ask them, if you can try their store displays in your car so that you know which one to get. It can be very frustrating.

whell is not good to put it in the middle or the passenger seat beacuse if someone crash you or you crash the baby going to fly out of the front window of the car but it on the side maybe behind the driver seat

You'll have to have it behind the passenger seat then, if a passenger's legs are all bunched up it doesn't really matter compared to the driver who needs to be able to control the vehicle properly. At least when you are driving and have stopped at lights you will be able to look across and back to see if little one is ok.

i have a 01 chevy malibu it is of a decent size but when my son was in his carrier i had him in the middle it came between the front seats some but worked out well and when he moved on to a convertible seat still rear facing i still put it in the middle and again it came in between the 2 fronts seats but it made me feel better cause with it wedged between the 2 it did not budge one bit. now at 16 months old he is forward facing and still in the middle. please go some where and have them check it may very well fit in the middle
