I think personally that Dreamworks SKG is very consistent with money makers (not always) and quality.
I think Miramax makes very good movies but they have a bad reputuation for trying to shove their films down moviegoers' throats at Oscar time, one infamous example: Dreamworks' Saving Private Ryan seemed a lock for Best Picture in 1998. Miramax pushed Shakespeare in Love hard for the big prize. Spielberg won Best Director for Ryan, but Shakespeare won Best Picture. There are notably few times in Oscar history when the Best Picture does not win the Best Director prize also. But Spielberg was very well known and John Madden, who directed Shakespeare was not.
There was some controversy over the split decision.
