a. An airplane is increasing its speed in the horizontal direction. The thrust is force R. The air resistance is force Q. These are the only two forces in the horizontal direction
b. A ball is hanging from a string. The ball is not moving. Force R is the tension in the string. Force Q is the force of gravity acting on the ball.
c. A boat is moving in a straight line at a constant speed of 30 mph. Force R is the force on the boat from the propeller action. Force Q is the sum of the frictional forces acting on the boat as it moves through the water.
d. A driver of a small compact car loses control and is thrown from his car. The car jumps the medium and crashes head on into a huge cement truck. Both vehicles are traveling 40 mph. Force R is the force the truck exerts on the car. Force Q is the force the car exerts on the truck.
