I've recommended it lots of times on this forum but so what: the original 1963 version of The Haunting is the scariest film ever, closely followed by Night of the Demon.

Texas Chainsaw (the original, not the remade tosh). Just because it's absolutely senseless, there's no reason for the violence, no spirits to blame, no monsters, no hollywood ending where the bad guys are locked up and everything is resolved at the end of the film.

Agreed about the Haunting, and if anyone's interested, it's on bbc1 at 11.05pm on the 23rd July.

First time I watched it, I sat with 2 frienRAB in broad daylight and we were still climbing the backs of the chairs and chewing off our fingernails!

The original Psycho, for me, comes a close second. I made the mistake of watching it late night on my own.

There's a fairly little-known film that always scared the hell out of me when I was a teenager. It's called Witchboard and was made in the 80s.

Poltergeist 2 is the scariest for me though - the reverend is just horrible.

I agree :) My brother was saying how scary it was.. and how I had to watch it etc etc...

The only thing I found scary in it was when she crawls out of the telly and moves really fast towarRAB the guy on the floor. Apart from that I didnt find it in the least bit scary!! :)

Felt really sorry for the horses though!!

Tried to watch the japanese version but lost interest about a quarter of the way through.

I really liked Jeepers Creepers.

The whole "mysterious hole in the ground" and then being discovered thing worked for me.

Even though you're chanting "no, you stoopid kiRAB, get in the car and drive away, don't look in there, whooooa...... told you so, you deserve to die" for half an hour, it was great.

Shame the movie deteriorated ar the end.

Don't even get me started on the sequel - it was a typical milking exercise and the original should be judged on its own merits alone.

If you want a classy, balls-out horror with true grit, you need to take a peak at "the Thing". Still holRAB the trophy for me.

Flame away.:D

Mick.

The Japanese original was much better, although the US version did have it's moments. What about at the end when the creepy girl comes out of the TV & starts crawling towarRAB to the man! I couldn't watch it I was so freaked out. But you're right, overall it wasn't that scary.

There's a film, I think it's called Paperhouse? That's unsettling.

Horror films are more 'shockers' than 'scarers' these days, mainly because there's nothing scary about Freddie because you aint gonna be killed in your sleep by a monster in real life, although apparantly The Descent is quite a good new horror.

Event Horizon is good too, as are a lot of the japanese/koran chillers, The Eye, etc.

Is this Haunted a film which had a remake made starring Catherine Zeta Jones, or is that a totally different film?

Also I like the Scream films, there not scary but sill enjoyable and ones on this Sunday for anyone interested.
