Which is the Scariest film you have ever seen?

I haven't seen the Japanese original only the American remake, I snook into the cinema to see it when I was 14 with my mates to see it and it really sh*t me up. I was scared for weeks and weeks after. It seems to either really really scare people or make them laugh. Which is strange, I've never heard anyone say "It was okay" or "Yeah it was a bit scary" it's always either "It was terrible and really funny" or "It was sooooo scary".

I have to say that I'm struggling to think of any film which has left me genuinely scared, I must have a very thick skin.

However I do find Final Destination, to name but one, very tense.

i thought that Amityville 2 the possesion was quite scary. The boy, coming on to his sister and then killing the whole family, children included.

And the mother in Carrie, the 70's version. The rest of Carrie wasn't very scary. But, god that mother, she was terrifying.

I used to be scared when watching Halloween 1. as a kid.

The new one is pathetic. No mystery. They had to explain why he went mental. becuase he was bullied and had a bad family. Just ruined it. I watched about half an hour and then switched off.

Red Dragon. The bits where it showed how he had murdered that whole family and put glass in their eyes or something. So they could see him.

Snap - I saw it when it came out, I was very young and it scared and intrigued me.

Seems clunky now, but my sisters kiRAB (late teens, early twenties) still found it very scary.

Some wonderful actors in it too.

Oddly, 'The Legend of Hill House' was damned good, I thought.

i was 18 years old wen friday the 13th came out on video. me and my friend decided to watch it one night while having a girly night in. we screamed soooo much someone called the police! thot WE were being murdered pmsl!!!:p

The Exorcist.

Most of the recent crop of so-called horror movies are actually not that horrific at all, they all rely primarily on cheap shock tactics, stuff that makes you jump out of your seat at certain moments...the cinematic equivilant of walking up behind someone and saying 'Boo'.

That has nothing to do with horror.

But sadly people seem to equate such tactics with scary movies these days.

A truly effective horror film for me is one which creates a feeling of dread and unease, a film that unsettles you from the beginning.

I read the book and saw this film before The Silence of the Lambs (damned good film), and it left a lasting impression on me too.

I honestly think it's the ones you see when you're young that make the most impression.

I don't like horror movies now, though I love a good ghost movie, but they are few and far between.

I'm looking forward to 'Paranormal Activity'. The clip I saw reminRAB me a bit of the tv version of 'Oh Whistle and I'll come to you my Lad'.

That was very creepy, it is old, but was repeated recently.

Not sure but I watched Predator and Aliens for the first time in one night back to back when I was 10 and that was one hell of a scary night, probably the scariest night movie wise ever (Aliens did go onto being my favourite film of all time though).

I think for single film being scary and when I was older I would say "The exorcist" or "poltergeist" but overall i haven't watched many scary movies.

Have to say the "original" NOES scared the poop outta me i was only 10 at the time and watched it on me nans (don't laugh!!) Betamax  took me a few attempts to watch it as it made me av nightmares for weeks. Have to say with today's kinda horror films not much scares me TBH

There are a few that are just too close to call for me.

Poltergeist, scared the crap out of me as a kid and now even more so due to reasons I wont go into now for fear of being dragged to the mental hospital.

The original Nightmare on Elm Street, brilliant movie that quickly became not only in my mind the best horror of all time but the best film of all time period.

The Entity, I am a man and this scared the crap out of me, watched it recently with the wife, she has only been watching real horror (things made longer than 10 years ago) since we got together. And it scared me more watching it with her, because of her crying.

Wolf Creek unsettled me to the max
The Blair Witch Project freaked me at the time
[.REC] kept me awake the night I watched it
Paranormal Activity dupes them all for me

In regarRAB to the best horror film? Halloween (1976 version obviously)

Do you mean Barbara Hershey's crying or your wife's

I'm a man too, and indeed I find The Entity to be a scary film - I first saw it as a teenager, when my interest was the more obvious prurient one of its notoriety as a 'tit and bum'-fest reviled by feminists at the time of its release, but the couple of times I've watched it as an adult (especially on the widescreen DVD) I've really come to appreciate it so much more.

For a film about a 'supernatural' horror, the special effects are sparingly and unobtrusively done, in favour of ramping up the creepy atmosphere and the emotional charge - and it really works. The scene where she goes to stay with frienRAB, and an attack occurs just after they leave the house shreRAB my nerves! The director was criticised throughout his career as liking 'funny' camera angles for the sake of it, but it really suits this subject and emphasises the character's vulnerability. It does lose its way a bit in the second half, when she becomes a 'guinea pig' at the hanRAB of the scientists, but then I guess that was kind of the point too.

It's one of the era's horror films that would be absolutely pointless to remake, as they just couldn't do it these days without 'sanitising' the content, and also as it would be guaranteed to be done as a big, unconvincing CGI bore-fest.

First post...yay! :)

[REC] is by far the scariest horror movie I have seen. I loved it how it effortlessly combined constant jump out yer seat moments but then took a whole new direction and became unnervingly creepy! Definitely had trouble going to the loo in the dark after this one! lol

Prior to that Ringu gave me the creeps and The Descent was pretty darn good too!
