Which is the best direction for a garden to face? (south, north, east or west?)?

I was told south....is that correct? Why or why not?
WHY DOES THE SOUTH GET THE MOST SUN?

I'm not sure, but our garden faces east and we get the morning to mid day sun and we have tomatoes the size of small grapefruits and have pumkins coming in that look larger than a 2 year old boy - and I'm not talking about a scrawing kid, but a nice (cute!) chunky one!

It depends on which hemisphere you live in. For instance, if you're in Australia it would need to point north, but in the US or Europe it should aim to the south because the sun will always be in the southern sky. But again, in the Southern hemisphere it will be opposite.
Then again, if you live right on the equator..it wouldn't make much difference. Either way, the sun rizes in the east and sets in the west, but typically for Americans the sun will always be in the southern sky 24/7/365

It all depends on what you want to grow. Like some things need a little sunshine and some alot.

If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, then south is the correct answer.
It will get direct sun all day.
If it's near a structure:
If it faced east or west, it would be shaded for half the day,
and if north, all day.

Depends on what area of your yard gets the most sun.
I live in the US where the sun it mostly in the Southern sky so if I had a totally open yard, I would want it to face South.
