Which is the best between Honda Civic, Scion tC, Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra or VW Jetta?

I'm looking to upgrade my 2007 Toyota Corolla LE. I've found the Corolla to be relatively underpowered and very bad at cornering. I'd like to get a car that's more stylish and powerful, without breaking the bank. So out of the cars listed above, which is the best overall in terms of style, performance and value? My budget is up to $20,000; I can purchase the 2008 SE Elantra with leather, heated seats and sunroof for under $20,000 I believe. What else might be good (please also list recommended trims)?
Also, please explain your answers (i.e. If you think Civic is best, why?)
