Which is better for a new rider the kawasaki ninja 250r 2008 or the 2009 honda rebel?

I'm looking to buy a bike come spring to save money and gas and i don't have that much money and i am a college student, and i'm looking to buy the rebel or ninja, which am i better off with commuter wise, comfortablity, easiness etc. i heard the rebel is not that good on highway and the ninja is hard to learn.
 
The Rebel is fine on the highway, and is highway legal in all 50 states. The Ninja is a fine motorcycle, but if you are looking for basic transportation then the Rebel is the way to go. In August they did a comparison of 4 motorcycles for a number of things as a first rider would look at them and for the gas mileage it was the rebel all the way.
You need to check out a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course before getting on any bike. I was lucky enough to find one that offered the course on their Honda Rebel. I was sold as soon as I sat down. It was a nice bike and I am looking for one now.
